Connect the oscilloscope probe to measure special signals (special patterns pick-up) to the generator terminal "B".

Method of measurement

Conditions under which the measurement is performed

Oscillogram of voltage of a working ignition system

Generator voltage measured at point

Examples of oscillograms of voltage of a faulty generator

Warning! The generator voltage measured at point "B" may change in a wave-like manner, as shown in the figure. Such a wave-like change occurs due to the operation of the voltage regulator caused by fluctuations in the load current and is not a sign of a generator malfunction. If the amplitude of the voltage fluctuation reaches a significant value (approximately 2 V or more at idle), this indicates a break in the generator output circuit due to the burnout of the fuse link between terminal "B" and the battery. In this case, the generator unit is in good working order.

Note: The size of the image on the screen (see table) can be changed by changing the gain of the oscilloscope.

It is best to analyze the oscillograms when the generator is running under load (in this case, the voltage regulator does not interfere with the measurements). (Measurements can be made with the headlights on.)

Check the status of the battery discharge indicator lamp (on/off). Check the entire electrical system.
