This test is performed to determine the condition of the connecting wire between the generator "B" terminal and the positive terminal of the battery (including the fusible link).

Before performing this test, please check the following.
  • Generator mounts
  • Drive belt tension.
  • Fuse link.
  • The presence of extraneous noise coming from the generator when the engine is running.

Turn the ignition key to the "LOCK" position.

Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

Connect a 0-120A DC clip-on ammeter to the wire between the alternator "B" terminal and the battery.

Attention! Connecting a conventional ammeter to a break in the circuit is possible if the electrical contact between the generator terminal "B" and the current wire is not broken.


Connect a digital voltmeter between the alternator B terminal and the positive battery terminal. Connect the positive test lead of the voltmeter to the alternator B terminal and the negative test lead to the positive battery terminal.

Connect the negative cable to the battery.

Connect a tachometer or MUT-II/III diagnostic tool.

During the test, the car hood must be open.



Start the engine.

At 2500 rpm, turn on the headlights and other lights. Ensure that the current reading on the ammeter is slightly over 30 A.

Gradually reduce the engine speed until the current is 30 A. Read the voltmeter readings.

Maximum permissible value: no more than 0.3 V.

Attention! If the generator output current is high and cannot be reduced to 30 A, set the current to 40 A. Take the voltmeter readings. At 40 A, the maximum permissible voltage drop is 0.4 V.


If the voltage drop value exceeds the specified values, the generator current wire is faulty. In this case, it is necessary to check the condition of the generator current wire from the "B" terminal to the positive terminal of the storage battery (including the fuse link).

If the wire tips are not tight enough or there are visible signs of insulation melting, then a restorative repair should be carried out and the test repeated.

After checking, release the accelerator pedal.

Turn off all lights.

Turn off the ignition.

Disconnect the tachometer or MUT-II/III diagnostic tool.

Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

Disconnect the ammeter and voltmeter.

Connect the negative cable to the battery.
