A brief history of the Japanese company Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation — Japanese multinational automobile manufacturer headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. The company was founded in 1970 from the automotive division of «Mitsubishi Heavy Industries». It is considered the sixteenth automaker in the world, owns 34% of the company «Nissan Motor» and is part of the Renault- Nissan-Mitsubishi. It is also part of the «Mitsubishi keiretsu» business group, previously the largest in Japan.

The company was founded by industrialist Iwasaki Yaatar (1835-1885), who became its president in 1870. The name «Mitsubishi» is a combination of mitsu (three) and hishi (water chestnut, often used in Japanese to represent a diamond or rhombus).

«Mitsubishi» automobiles appeared in 1917, when «Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.» introduced the first mass-produced car in Japan with the name «Mitsubishi Model A». A completely hand-built sedan based on the «Fiat Tipo 3», it proved expensive compared to its American and European production competitors and was discontinued in 1921. A total of 22 cars were built.

In 1934, «Mitsubishi Shipbuilding» was merged with «Mitsubishi Aircraft», founded in 1920 to manufacture aircraft engines and parts for them. The combined company was named «Mitsubishi Heavy Industries» (MHI) and was the largest private company in Japan. She focused on the production of aircraft, ships, wagons and other equipment. In 1937, a prototype sedan for military use was developed with the name «PX33». It was the first Japanese passenger car with four-wheel drive.

After the end of World War II, the company returned to the production of cars, buses, and also developed a small three-wheeled truck «Mizushima» and a scooter «Silver Pigeon». However, in 1950, the Allied Powers ordered the zaibatsu (Japan's industrial conglomerates) to be dismantled, and «Mitsubishi Heavy Industries» was split into three regional companies: Western, Central, and Eastern Heavy Industries, each of which was engaged in the development of automobiles.

The East Company began importing the low-cost American «Henry J» sedan manufactured by «Kaiser Motors» as a CKD kit in 1951 and continued to produce it for three years. In the same year, the Central Company entered into a similar contract with «Willys» for an assembled CKD «Jeep CJ-3B». This deal turned out to be more durable, since licensed «Mitsubishi Jeeps» were produced until 1998.

By the early 1960s, Japan's economy was growing rapidly, as were salaries, and family cars began to gain popularity. The central company began to produce a sedan for the mass market «Mitsubishi 500». In 1962, the «Minica kei» appeared, and in 1963, the «Colt 1000», the first of the «Colt» family car line, appeared. In 1964, Mitsubishi introduced its largest passenger sedan, the «Debonair», as a luxury car.

The Western and Eastern companies also expanded their automotive divisions and in 1964 were reintegrated with the Central to form «Mitsubishi Heavy Industries». Within three years, the production was more than 75,000 cars per year. After the successful launch of the first «Galant» in 1969 and similar success with the commercial vehicle division, it was decided that the company should focus on the automotive industry.

Repair of Mitsubishi brand cars

Japanese cars stand out for their high quality and the «Mitsubishi» brand is no exception. The long history of car production, the experience gained in it and the most advanced technologies guarantee the long operation of your car. The most important thing is to service it on time and correctly - change engine oil, other operating fluids, lubrication and control of the technical condition of components and elements. On the proper operation and maintenance of Mitsubishi, you will find the necessary information on this website.

Despite all the correct maintenance operations, nothing in our world is eternal. And since a car is a very complex mechanism, consisting of thousands of parts, it will break down sooner or later. There are several ways to ensure the repair of Mitsubishi cars. The first and most reliable is to contact the official authorized service. But this method has disadvantages, such as the high cost of repairs and the lack of such service centers in small towns. You can turn to universal car services or service stations (SRT), but this will not be cheap either. You can also turn to private craftsmen working in «garages», here you will win at a cost, but the risk of spoiling a complex assembly or installing low-quality spare parts is quite high.

If you have space in the garage, tools, desire and, most importantly, locksmith skills, then you can repair your «Mitsubishi» car yourself. Using the Internet, ordering the necessary spare part, original or analogue, is currently not difficult for almost anyone. And on our website you will find a step-by-step and detailed manual for the repair of certain «Mitsubishi» components and assemblies.
