When the ignition key is turned to the "START" position, current from the battery enters the pull-in and holding windings of the traction relay. The anchor of the traction relay is pulled into the relay, thereby acting on the drive lever, which engages the starter drive pinion with the flywheel ring gear.
On the opposite side, the moving contact of the anchor closes contacts "B" and "M". After the fixed contacts close, the current flows to the windings of the starter electric motor.
After turning the ignition key to the "ON" position after starting the engine, the pinion is disengaged from the flywheel ring gear. The overrunning clutch connects the drive pinion and the armature shaft and serves to prevent the starter armature from running away.
