Caution: Before installing a new gasket, clean and degrease the cylinder head and cylinder block surfaces. Make sure there are no foreign objects (residues of the old gasket, oil and coolant) in the lubrication channels, cooling channels and cylinders.

Note: if the cylinder head or block surfaces have been ground, or if the cylinder head, cylinder block or connecting rod and piston group elements have been replaced (including when grinding the crankshaft), it is necessary to select the thickness of the new gasket by checking the amount of piston protrusion above the plane of the cylinder block surface.

When replacing an old gasket with a new one (without carrying out repair work), determine the size group based on its marking, in accordance with the data provided.

When installing a new gasket (after carrying out repair work), determine the size group (gasket thickness) by measuring the protrusion of the pistons above the plane of the cylinder block.

Method of measuring the piston protrusion value

[The original article was published on MITSUBISHIMAN]

Measurements are taken at the points indicated in the figure. The measurement points are located on the cylinder block axis. When measuring, the corresponding piston must be in the TDC position.

Having determined the average value based on the measurement results at eight points, select the gasket thickness based on the data provided in the table. If the value for any piston exceeds the value for the selected size group, select a gasket one size thicker.

Note: If the protrusion of any piston exceeds the maximum allowable value, the connecting rod, piston, crankshaft or cylinder block must be replaced and the check repeated.
