Electrical diagram of the starter of a gasoline engine
If the traction relay fails, the starter pinion does not engage with the flywheel ring gear. Because of this, the starter cannot turn the engine.
Note: On diesel engines, the starter current circuit is switched on via an additional starter relay.
Examination
Remove the starter.
Starter without gearbox

Remove the excitation winding wire from terminal C.
Connect the "cigarette lighter" wires to the battery as shown in the pictures. The starter gear should jerk forward.
Attention: The wires must be connected for no longer than 5 seconds, otherwise the traction relay winding will burn out.
Remove the ground wire from terminal C. The starter gear should remain in the extended position, otherwise replace the traction relay.
Starter with reduction gear (only on diesel engines and 136 hp engines produced since 9.88)

Remove the ground wire from the starter housing. The starter pinion should retract, otherwise replace the traction relay.
Removal

Loosen 2 mounting bolts and disconnect the starting relay wire terminal from the drive housing, disconnect the starting relay. Remove the spacer washers
Installation
Install the starting relay with spacers, connect it to the lever in the starter and secure it.
Check the traction relay in the manner described above.
Install the starter.
