If the traction relay is defective, the starter pinion does not engage the flywheel ring gear, and the starter does not turn the engine. On diesel engines, the starter current circuit is switched on via an additional starter relay.

Examination



Remove the starter.

Disconnect the excitation winding wire from terminal (30).

Connect the "cigarette lighter" cables to the battery for a few seconds as shown in the picture below. The starter gear should move forward.



Remove the ground wire from terminal C. The starter pinion should remain in the extended position. If not, replace the traction relay.



Removal



Unscrew the two mounting bolts, remove the starting relay wire terminal from the drive housing, and disconnect the relay.

Remove the spacer washers.



Installation



Install the starting relay in the reverse order of removal.
