Removal
1. Jack up the car and place it on supports.
2. Drain the transmission fluid from the differential and remove the center section of the exhaust system.
3. Mark the installation position and disconnect the rear end of the propeller shaft from the differential (see Section Removal and installation the propeller shaft).
4. Remove the axle shafts (see Section Removal and installation rear axle shafts (AWD Galant models through 1993)).
5. If equipped, remove the rear wheel steering pump assembly.
6. Self-locking nuts may be used on the large bolts that secure the differential backing plate to the underbody of the vehicle. Before loosening the nuts, support the differential centered with a dolly jack. Loosen the nuts and remove the backing plate(s) and square vibration damper from the rear of the differential case.
7. Lower the differential assembly and remove it from under the vehicle.
Installation
1. Place the differential in its original position and screw in the carrier beam bolts. Replace all self-locking nuts.

2. If equipped, reinstall the rear wheel steering pump.
3. After replacing the retaining rings, install the rear axle shafts.
4. Install the driveshaft.
5. Install the center section of the exhaust system with the muffler.
6. Lower the car to the ground.
7. Fill the differential housing with fresh transmission oil.
