Checking the steering wheel play (Mitsubishi Lancer 3)

• Set the steering wheel to the center position.
• Turn the steering wheel in different directions, while watching the front wheels. It is permissible to have a play of about 30 mm on the steering wheel.

Note: On vehicles with power steering, check the play with the engine running. Maximum allowable play: 30 mm. With the engine off and a horizontal force of 0.5 kg applied to the outer edge of the steering wheel, the maximum allowable play is 11 mm.

• If the play is greater, check the steering rods and front wheel play.
• Move the steering rods strongly by hand in different directions. There should be no noticeable play in the ball joints, otherwise replace the joints or steering tips.
