The MPI control relay is located at the rear of the center console. When the ignition is turned on, it supplies power to the control unit.
1.5L engine
Remove relay.
Connect an ohmmeter between the following contacts and measure the resistance:
- pins 3-5: about 95 ohms
- pins 2-5: about 95 ohms
- pins 6-7: about 35 ohms
- pins 6-8: about 0 ohm (only in one direction).
Measure the resistance between pins 1 and 4. Required value: ∞. If the resistance is 0, replace the control relay.
Connect the battery voltage directly to pins 6 and 7 using jumpers, as shown in fig. Measure the resistance between pins 1 and 4. Required value: ∞. If the resistance is 0, replace the control relay.
Attention: when connecting the battery, make sure that the connection is correct, otherwise the relay may be damaged.
Connect a jumper between the positive battery terminal and pin 8. Measure the resistance between pins 2 and 4. Required value* 0 ohm. Remove the jumper, the resistance should now be ∞. Otherwise, replace the control relay
Engines 1.6 / 1.8 l (16 valves)
Remove the relay and use two wires to apply voltage from the battery directly to pins 4 and 5 as shown. Measure the voltage on pins 4 and 5. The required value is 12V.
Attention: when connecting the battery, make sure that the connection is correct, otherwise the relay may be damaged.
Connect battery ground to terminal 6, battery positive to terminal 9. Measure the resistance between terminals 2 and 3. Required value: 0 V. If the resistance is ∞, replace the control relay.
Connect battery ground to terminal 7, battery positive to terminal 3. Measure voltage at terminal 2. Required value: 12 V.
