Intake and exhaust system — general information (Mitsubishi Pajero 4)

The intake manifold is cast from aluminum alloy. The shape of the intake manifold ensures better filling of the cylinders with air due to the inertial effect at the intake. The exhaust manifold is made of stainless steel. The exhaust pipe consists of three parts: the downpipe, the center pipe and the main muffler.

Possible malfunctions and methods of their elimination

Malfunction	Method of elimination
The exhaust manifold is cracked or broken	Replace the exhaust manifold
Exhaust gas leakage between the exhaust manifold and the cylinder head	Tighten the exhaust manifold and/or replace the seal
Exhaust gas leakage between the exhaust flexible connection and the exhaust manifold	Tighten the connectors or replace the seal
Flexible outlet connection	Replace the catalytic converter assembly
Exhaust gas leaks at exhaust pipe connections	Tighten or replace clamps
The muffler or exhaust pipe is burnt out or rusted	Replace the muffler or exhaust pipe
Narrowing in the muffler or exhaust pipe	Remove restriction if possible or replace muffler or exhaust pipe
Components of the catalytic converter in the muffler	Replace the muffler and catalytic converter assembly. Check the correct operation of the ignition and injection system
