There are three sources of environmental pollution in a car - crankcase gases, exhaust gases and gasoline evaporation, represented by incompletely burned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. Equipment used to limit the content of these harmful substances is called equipment for reducing harmful emissions into the atmosphere.

In recent model vehicles, many engine functions are increasingly controlled by an electronic control unit, eliminating the need for the many vacuum hoses and linkages found around the engines of earlier model vehicles.
