Attention! Servicing of the exhaust system should be started only after its components have completely cooled down - remember that the surface of the catalytic converter can heat up to very high temperatures during vehicle operation! Make sure that the vehicle is securely fixed in the raised position.

General information

The models covered in this Manual are equipped with one of two types of exhaust systems. One design uses flange joints equipped with sealing gaskets and tightened with bolts to connect the sections of the system together, while the other uses sliding clamps.

Due to the fact that during the operation of the car, the components of the exhaust system are constantly exposed to aggressive environmental influences and high temperatures, the assembly components may be "stuck" to each other, so before you start loosening the fasteners, you should soak the joints of the corresponding sections with penetrating oil. In particularly difficult cases, you will have to use a hacksaw, chisel or blowtorch. It would be best to entrust the replacement of the system components to car service specialists.

Checking the status of components

1. The condition of the exhaust system components must be checked regularly in accordance with the Vehicle Maintenance Schedule (see Chapter Settings and ongoing maintenance).

(The original article was published on: MITSUBISHIMAN.ru)

2. Jack up the car and place it on supports. Remove the heat shields that limit the field of view and access.

3. The inspection should begin with an inspection of the joint between the exhaust pipe and the exhaust manifold/turbocharger.

4. Carefully inspect the system along its entire length, checking sections and components for deformations, signs of leaks, loose seams and other mechanical defects.

5. Assess the condition of the rubber suspensions of the system supports. Replace defective elements.
