Warning! Remember that gasoline is highly flammable! When working with fuel system components, observe all accepted fire safety measures. Do not smoke! Do not approach the work area with an open flame or unprotected portable appliance! Do not service the system in rooms equipped with natural gas heating devices equipped with a pilot flame (such as water heaters and clothes dryers). Do not forget that gasoline is a carcinogen, i.e., a substance that promotes the development of cancer! Try to avoid fuel coming into contact with exposed areas of the body, use rubber protective gloves, and in case of accidental contact with fuel, wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap. Collect spilled fuel immediately and do not store rags soaked in fuel near open flames. Remember that the fuel system of models equipped with fuel injection is constantly under pressure. Before disconnecting fuel lines, relieve residual pressure in the system. Wear safety glasses when servicing fuel system components. Always keep a Class B fire extinguisher on hand!
1. The fuel system pressure must be relieved before servicing any of its components to minimize the risk of fuel ignition and personal injury to the operator.
2. Turn the key to the OFF position and turn off the ignition.
3. To relieve excess pressure in the fuel tank, remove the filler cap.
4. On Mirage, Diamante and Galant models from 1994 to 2000, remove the rear seat cushion. Remove the service cover in the passenger compartment floor and disconnect the fuel pump wiring.
5. On front-wheel drive (FWD) Galant models from 1990–1993, disconnect the fuel pump wiring connector located near the fuel tank.
Note: It is possible that the rear of the vehicle will need to be jacked up and supported on supports to provide access to the connector.
6. On 1990-1993 Galant AWD models, remove the cargo area carpet and locate the wiring harness that runs to the fuel pump service access cover. Disconnect the connector.
7. Start the engine and wait until it stops on its own, then turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
8. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Caution! If the car stereo system is equipped with a security code, make sure you have the correct combination to activate the audio system before disconnecting the battery! Connect the electrical wiring to the pump and replace the service cover/lower the car to the ground. On applicable models, install the rear seat cushion/luggage compartment mat.
9. Wrap the fitting to be disconnected with a rag, prepare paper towels to collect spilled fuel.
