Note: This test determines if the generator voltage regulator is properly controlling the generator output voltage.
1. Before starting a test, always check the following:
- A) Generator installation.
- b) Battery status (must be fully charged).
- V) Alternator drive belt tension.
- G) Melting insert.
- d) Absence of extraneous noise during the operation of the generator.
2. Turn off the ignition (ignition key in position "OFF").
3. Disconnect a wire from the negative plug of the storage battery.
4. Connect a digital voltmeter.
Use the special tool to connect the wire "pluses" voltmeter to output "S" generator, and then securely connect the wire "minus" voltmeter with "weight" or connect it to the negative battery terminal.
5. Disconnect the standard wire from the output "IN" generator.
6. Connect the wire "pluses" ammeter (DC with measuring range 0 - 100 A) to the conclusion "IN" generator, and the wire "minus" ammeter to the disconnected standard wire.
7. Connect the tachometer (tester).
8. Reconnect the wire to the negative battery terminal.
9. Turn on the ignition (key position "ON") and check that the voltmeter shows battery voltage.
Note: if the voltmeter shows 0 V, then an open circuit is likely between the output "S" alternator and positive battery terminal (including fusible link).
10. Turn off all lighting and additional electrical equipment of the car.
11. Start the engine.
12. Set the engine speed to 2500 rpm.
13. Read the voltmeter reading when the generator output current is 10 A or less.
14. If the voltmeter readings correspond to the nominal values of the regulated voltage given in the table, then the voltage regulator is working. If the voltmeter readings do not correspond to the range of nominal values, then either the voltage regulator or the generator is faulty.
Table. Output voltage "S" generator.
Air temperature around the voltage regulator (in the engine compartment) | Rated voltage, V |
-20°C | 14,2-15,4 |
20°C | 13,9-14,9 |
60°С | 13,4-14,6 |
80°С | 13,1 - 14,5 |
15. After the end of the check, let the engine idle.
16. Turn off the ignition (ignition key in position "OFF").
17. Disconnect a wire from the negative plug of the storage battery.
18. Disconnect the ammeter, voltmeter and tachometer.
19. Connect the standard wire to the output "IN" generator.
20. Connect a wire to the negative plug of the storage battery.
