If there is significant free play in the steering wheel when the steering column tilt lever is in the locked position, it is necessary to check the condition of the steering column shaft assembly.
Attention! If the vehicle continues to move after the energy-absorbing mechanism has been activated, the steering column shaft may be damaged while the vehicle is still in use.
Attention! If the disposable capsule is slack, do not attempt to repair the assembly, simply replace the steering column shaft assembly.
Test Method
Remove the lower and upper guards of the steering column.
Attention! Do not loosen the steering column tilt lever until you have completed the procedure for installing it and checking its condition.
Make sure the steering column tilt lever is locked.
Note. If not, set the steering column tilt lever to the locked position.
Loosen the top two steering column mounting bolts two turns.
Holding the disposable capsules as shown in the picture, try to fix them. If any of the capsules is felt to be loose, the steering column assembly must be replaced.
Note. When installing a new steering column shaft assembly, set the tilt lever to the locked position if it is not already there.
Attention! Be careful not to pinch anything between the disposable capsules and the body.
Attention! Do not loosen the steering column tilt lever until you have completed the procedure for installing it and checking its condition.
If during the inspection no defects are found, tighten the steering column mounting bolts to the nominal torque.
