The ignition distributor is driven by the camshaft. Until August 1990, it was mounted next to the intake manifold, at the rear of the cylinder head. Since September 1990, the ignition distributor has been mounted on the front side of the cylinder head.

Removal

Disconnect the ground cable from the battery.

Caution: This erases data in the electronic memory, such as the engine fault memory or the radio code. Only disconnect the battery with the ignition off, otherwise the fuel injection unit control unit may be damaged. Before disconnecting the battery, read the instructions in the sections "Radio" and "Removal and installation the battery".

Carburetor engine: Disconnect the vacuum hose from the distributor vacuum fitting.

Disconnect the electrical wires from the ignition distributor and disconnect the connectors. Before doing this, mark the wires with adhesive tape.

Remove the ignition distributor cap by using a screwdriver to press the 2 retaining clips or unscrew the 2 bolts.

Set the engine to the TDC position of cylinder 1, see p. 1.6.

Loosen the mounting nut.

Remove the ignition distributor from the cylinder head.

Installation

If present, check the integrity of the sealing ring at the base of the distributor and replace if necessary.

Check whether the engine is in the TDC position of cylinder 1, set if necessary, see item 16.

Cars produced before August 1990.

Turn the gear wheel until the installation marking on the gear matches the marking on the housing.

Install the ignition distributor and adjust it so that the mark on the distributor flange is opposite the stud.

Insert and secure the ignition distributor.

Cars produced since September 1990.

Turn the distributor shaft so that the marking on the clutch matches the marking on the distributor housing.

Install the ignition distributor and straighten it so that the mark on the flange is approximately in the middle of the distributor stud.

Secure the ignition distributor in this position.

Caution: When tightening the flange nut, do not allow the ignition distributor to turn.

Clean the inside of the distributor cap, put it on and secure it with 2 bolts or 2 retaining clips.

Carburetor engine: Attach the vacuum hose to the vacuum fitting on the distributor.

Connect electrical wires to the distributor.

Connect the ground cable to the battery.

Set the time on the clock, if available, and enter the radio security code.

Check the ignition timing and adjust if necessary.

Tighten the distributor mounting nut(s) to 10 Nm.
