The cable needs to be replaced if it is worn out, and the characteristic noise emitted by the cable can be mistaken for an engine malfunction. A faulty cable can be identified by sharp jumps in the speed indicator needle.
On some vehicles the cable is connected to a pulse generator rather than a speed indicator. These pulses are used to control the fuel and ignition systems and are also converted into speed and distance readings.
Replacement
1. To replace the cable, you need to disconnect it from the gearbox. After unscrewing the union nut, remove the instrument panel and disconnect the casing from the panel (see subsection 13.16).
