The replacement of the cable is necessary in case of wear, when the characteristic noise emitted by the cable can be mistaken for an engine malfunction. A cable failure can be identified by sharp jumps in the speed indicator needle.
On some cars, the cable is connected to the pulse generator, and not to the speed indicator. These pulses are used to control the power and ignition system, and are also converted into speed and distance readings.
Replacement
1. To replace the cable, disconnect it from the gearbox. having unscrewed the union nut, remove the instrument panel and disconnect the shell from the shield (see subsection 13.16).
2. The cable is pulled out of the sheath.
3. When replacing the cable, lightly lubricate it with lithol (grease should not be closer than 25 mm from the end).
