Examination

1. All models considered in this Manual use toothed timing belt(s) to drive the camshaft(s) from the engine crankshaft, ensuring that the valve timing settings are maintained.

2. The condition of the timing belts should be checked regularly, strictly in accordance with the schedule of routine maintenance of the vehicle (see Section Schedule of current maintenance of Mitsubishi Galant/Mirage/Diamante cars). A broken belt will cause the engine to stop immediately and on some models (1.6L, 2.0L, 2.4L, 3.0L and 3.5L) may cause serious internal engine damage due to the valves hitting the piston crowns.

On the latter, the timing belt(s) must be replaced every 96,000 km!

3. Timing belt wear can cause a decrease in engine efficiency. Regularly check the belts along their entire length for cracks, cuts, delamination, damage to the teeth and fabric base. Replace if necessary.

Replacement
