Checking the travel of the parking brake lever or rod
Tighten the lever (rod) until it stops, applying a force of 200 N (20 kg), and count the number of clicks of the lock.
Nominal number of clicks for:
- parking brake lever (type I) - 8-9;
- parking brake rods (type II) - 11-13.
For other values, it is necessary to adjust the lever (rod) stroke.
Adjusting the lever stroke (type I) of the parking brake
Remove the rear console of the pedal. Release the lever completely and. Loosen the adjusting nut to loosen the tension of the cables.
Start the engine, press the brake pedal several times (5-6) and make sure that the pedal stroke does not change. This indicates that the automatic clearance adjustment mechanism between the brake drum and the shoes is working properly.
Rotate the adjusting nut to adjust the stroke (number of clicks until fully tightened) in accordance with the data given above (8-9 clicks). After adjustment, make sure that there is no gap between the lever body and the adjusting nut (with the lever released). Raise the rear of the car with a jack and make sure that (with the parking brake released) the wheels rotate freely, without jamming.

Adjusting the traction stroke (type II) of the parking brake

Release the rod completely and loosen the tension of the cables by unscrewing the adjusting nuts.
Start the engine, press the brake pedal several times (5-6) and make sure that the pedal stroke does not change. This indicates that the automatic clearance adjustment mechanism between the brake drum and the shoes is working properly.
Turn the adjusting nuts to adjust the stroke (number of clicks until fully tightened) according to the data given above (11-13 clicks).

After adjustment, make sure that the angle between the connecting rod and the equalizer is 90°, as shown in Figure M2 1.060.
Caution: If the full tightening stroke of the parking brake is less than the specified value, the brake shoes may jam.
Raise the rear of the vehicle with a jack and make sure that (with the parking brake released) the wheels rotate freely without binding.
