Fig. 1.37. Key positions in the ignition switch
The key in the ignition switch (lock) can occupy the following positions (Fig. 1.37):
- 1 - the engine is off, the steering wheel is locked. The ignition key can only be inserted and removed in this position;
- 2 - the engine is off, you can turn on the radio, cigarette lighter, etc.;
- 3 - the engine is running, all electrical systems can be switched on;
- 4 - The starter is working. After the engine starts, release the key and it will automatically return to the "ON" position.
If the car is equipped with a manual transmission, to remove the key from the ignition switch, turn it to the " ACC "position, then press the key until it turns to the "LOCK" position, and then remove it. If the car is equipped with an automatic transmission, you can remove the key from the ignition switch by first setting the gear selector lever to the "P" position, then turning the key to the "LOCK" position.
Starting the engine of cars with diesel engines
1. Insert the key into the instrument and starter switch and fasten the seat belt.
2. Raise the parking brake lever.
3. Press and hold the brake pedal.
4. Set the gear shift lever to neutral position "N".
5. Press the clutch pedal fully.
6. Turn the key to the "ON" position. The starting aid (glow plug) indicator light will first turn on yellow and then turn off after a while, indicating that the glow plug heating has been completed.
7. Turn the key to the "START" position without pressing the accelerator pedal and release the key when the engine starts.
When the engine is cold, the glow plug starting aid indicator lamp stays on for a longer period of time.
If the engine does not start within about 5 seconds after the diesel engine starting aid (glow plug) indicator lamp goes out, return the key to the "LOCK" position. Then turn the key to the "ON" position to reheat the glow plugs.
When the engine is warm, the glow plug starting aid indicator lamp does not come on even if the key is in the "ON" position. Start the engine by turning the key in the instrument and starter switch to the "START" position to the right.
