Removal
- Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.
- Open the tailgate and remove the high-mounted brake light.
- Using a trim remover or a wide-blade screwdriver, separate the lower trim of the luggage compartment door around the perimeter (Fig. 17.57).

- Remove the dampers from the door (Fig. 17.58).

- Remove the corrugated protective cover from the luggage compartment door and disconnect the electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the windshield washer fluid supply hose from the tailgate.
- While an assistant holds the door open, remove the bolts securing the upper gas strut supports.
Warnings
- Do not disassemble or dispose of the gas-filled tailgate support strut in a fire.
- Before disposing of the gas-filled strut, drill into the strut body to remove the gas.
- Use a marker to mark the positions of the door hinges.
- While assistants support the door, remove the bolts securing the door hinges to the body and remove the door from the vehicle.
- If necessary, remove the seal from the door opening.
- If necessary, unscrew the bolts and remove the lock retainer.
Installation
- Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.
- Install the door seal so that the mark on the seal is located at the top of the door opening in the center of the vehicle.
- After installation, lubricate the door hinges with universal grease in the places shown in Figure 17.57.
- Install gas-filled struts.
- Adjust the position of the tailgate.
