Removal
- Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.
- Remove the lower engine splash shield.
- Remove the engine oil level indicator.
- Remove the plug and drain the engine oil (Fig. 4.15). Loosen the engine oil drain plug by about half a turn. Place a container to collect the oil under the plug and unscrew the plug completely. If necessary, apply pressure to the plug when unscrewing it to prevent premature oil leakage.

Warning: Prolonged skin contact with mineral oil will strip away the natural oils from human skin, causing dryness, irritation, and dermatitis. In addition, used motor oil contains potentially harmful substances that can cause skin cancer.
- Remove the oil pan mounting bolts.
- Insert the blade of a flat-head screwdriver into the groove of the oil pan (Fig. 4.16). Turn the screwdriver to separate the oil pan from the cylinder block.

Warning: Since the oil pan is made of aluminum alloy, the puller (MB998727) cannot be used to remove it.
Examination
- Check the oil pan for cracks.
- Check the mating surface of the oil pan for damage or deformation.
- Check the oil strainer and oil pickup tube for cracks, dirt, or damaged wire mesh and tube.
Installation
- Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.
- Clean and degrease the mating surfaces of the cylinder block and oil pan.
- Apply a continuous bead of MITSUBISHI MD970389 sealant with a diameter of approximately 4 mm to the mating surface of the oil pan flange that mates with the cylinder block (Fig. 4.17).

- Within 30 minutes of applying the sealant, install the oil pan and secure with bolts, tightening them to the required torque.
- Screw the engine oil drain plug into the oil pan, and install a new sealing ring on the plug.
- Fill the engine with motor oil.
- Install the lower engine splash shield.
- Connect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery.
- Start the engine and check for engine oil leaks.
