Removal

• Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.
• Drain the coolant from the engine cooling system.
• Remove the air filter.
• Remove the timing belt of the gas distribution mechanism drive.
• Using special tools MB990767 and MD998719, block the camshaft pulley from turning and unscrew the pulley mounting bolt (Fig. 4.10). Remove the pulley from the camshaft.

• Remove the bolts and the rear upper timing belt cover.
• Using a knife or a flat-head screwdriver, make a groove near the working edge of the seal.

Warning: Be careful not to damage the camshaft and cylinder head.

• Insert a flat-head screwdriver blade wrapped in cloth into the punched groove and, using the screwdriver as a lever, remove the seal.
• Loosen the clamp and disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose.
• Disconnect the vacuum hose from the vacuum pump.
• Remove the bolts and vacuum pump.
• Loosen the clamp and disconnect the upper radiator hose from the cooling system pipe.
• Remove the bolts and cover and cylinder head gasket.
• Evenly and gradually loosen the camshaft cover mounting bolts and remove the camshaft bearing cover.
• Remove the camshaft and woodruff key from the camshaft.

Installation

• Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.
• Lubricate the camshaft journals and cams with engine oil.
• Install the camshaft into the cylinder head.
• Install the camshaft bearing cap.
• In a certain sequence, screw in and tighten the camshaft bearing cover mounting bolts to the required torque (Fig. 4.11).

• Lubricate the working edge of the camshaft oil seal with engine oil (Fig. 4.12).

• To prevent damage to the working edge of the oil seal during its installation, wrap the end of the camshaft with adhesive tape.
• Slide the oil seal onto the camshaft and install it into the cylinder head socket using a special tool (Fig. 4.13).

• Apply a layer of sealant to the mating surface of the cylinder head cover (Fig. 4.14).

• Install the woodruff key onto the camshaft.
• Connect the upper radiator hose to the cooling system pipe.
• Install and bolt the vacuum pump.
• Connect the vacuum hose to the vacuum pump.
• Connect the brake booster vacuum hose.
• Install the camshaft pulley and secure it with the bolt, tightening it to the required torque.
• Using special tools MB990767 and MD998719, block the camshaft pulley from turning and tighten the pulley mounting bolt to a torque of 50 N·m (see Fig. 4.10).
• Install and bolt the rear upper timing belt cover.
• Install the timing belt to drive the gas distribution mechanism.
• Install the air filter.
• Fill the engine cooling system with coolant.
• Connect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery.
