Removing
- Disconnect the wire from the negative battery terminal.
- Drain the coolant from the engine cooling system.
- Remove the air filter.
- Remove the timing belt drive timing.
- Using special tools MB990767 and MD998719, block the camshaft pulley from turning and remove the pulley mounting bolt (pic. 4.10). Remove the pulley from the camshaft.

- Turn out bolts and remove a back top casing of a gear belt.
- Punch a groove near the sealing lip with a knife or flathead screwdriver.
Warning. Be careful not to damage the camshaft and cylinder head.
- Insert a flat screwdriver blade wrapped in cloth into the punched groove, and, using a screwdriver as a lever, remove the oil seal.
- Loosen the clamp and disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose.
- Disconnect the vacuum hose from the vacuum pump.
- Turn out bolts and remove the vacuum pump.
- Loosen the clamp and disconnect the upper radiator hose from the cooling system pipe.
- Turn out bolts and remove a cover and a laying of a head of cylinders.
- Loosen the camshaft cover bolts evenly and gradually and remove the camshaft bearing cover.
- Remove the camshaft and segment key from the camshaft.
Installation
- Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.
- Lubricate the camshaft journals and cams with engine oil.
- Install the camshaft to the cylinder head.
- Install the camshaft bearing cap.
- In a certain sequence, screw in and tighten the bolts securing the camshaft bearing caps to the required torque (pic. 4.11).

- To prevent damage to the sealing edge of the oil seal when installing it, wrap the end of the camshaft with adhesive tape.
- Slide the oil seal onto the camshaft and install it into the cylinder head seat with a special tool (pic. 4.13).

- Install the segment key on the camshaft.
- Connect the upper radiator hose to the cooling system inlet.
- Install and bolt the vacuum pump.
- Connect the vacuum hose to the vacuum pump.
- Connect the vacuum hose of the vacuum brake booster.
- Install the camshaft pulley and secure with a bolt, tightening it to the required torque.
- Using special tools MB990767 and MD998719, block the camshaft pulley from turning and tighten the pulley mounting bolt to 50 Nm (see fig. 4.10).
- Install and bolt the rear upper toothed belt guard.
- Install the timing belt drive of the gas distribution mechanism.
- Install the air filter.
- Pour coolant into the engine cooling system.
- Connect the wire to the negative battery terminal.
