Adjustment of the tension of the toothed belt transmission, which has an automatic device, for 8 and 12 valve petrol engines, is performed in the following sequence:

Remove the power steering pump drive V-belt.

Loosen the water pump belt pulley while pressing lightly on the belt with your hand.

Remove the A/C compressor V-belt and A/C compressor belt pulley bracket.

Remove the alternator drive V-belt.

Unscrew the upper and then the lower timing belt cover.

Remove the caps from all the spark plugs and unscrew the spark plugs with a spark plug wrench.

Rotate the crankshaft clockwise, checking the condition of the toothed belt. The gearbox should be in neutral and the parking brake should be tightened. Rotate the crankshaft using the head on the central bolt. Always rotate the crankshaft clockwise.

Turn the engine until the piston of the first cylinder reaches the top dead center (TDC). The mark on the camshaft should match the corresponding mark.

To allow the tensioner to move, loosen both bolts.

Turn the crankshaft clockwise so that the camshaft gear rotates 2 teeth (18°).

In this position, press the tensioner. This will keep the individual gears engaged with the timing belt.

To ensure that the belt is tensioned only by the spring, release the tensioner.

Tighten the belt tensioner fastener. First tighten the installation bolt in the groove, and then tighten the pivot shaft fastening bolt.

Check the belt tension again by pressing the belt with your finger at about the middle of the belt tensioner. The belt should deflect to about 1/4 the width of the belt tensioner pinch bolt head.

Insert the spark plugs and put on the spark plug caps.

Install the lower timing belt cover, then the upper timing belt cover.

Install the A/C compressor belt pulley bracket and install the water pump belt pulley.

Install the V-belt.
