Intermediate shaft — removal and installation (Mitsubishi Galant 5)

1. Set the front wheels in a strictly straight position. Raise the car and place it on supports.

2. Using white paint, apply alignment marks to the upper universal joint, intermediate steering shaft, lower universal joint, and steering gear shaft.

17.2b. Place alignment marks on the intermediate shaft and steering column shaft (and the other end of the intermediate shaft and the steering gearbox input shaft) (Precis model shown)




3. Unscrew the lower and upper universal joint tie bolts.

4. Unscrew the mudguard cover clamp bolts (if equipped) and slide the cover towards the cabin.

5. Slide the intermediate shaft joint off the steering gear shaft. Separate the shaft from the steering gear and pull the assembly towards the cabin.

6. Install in the reverse order. Align the marks and tighten the tie bolts to the torque specified in specifications of this Chapter.
