Note: This procedure applies to both power and non-power steering gearboxes. When working with a non-power steering gearbox, skip the notes that apply to power steering.
Removal
1. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it on jack stands. Apply the parking brake.
2. Place a pan under the steering gear (power steering gear). Remove the supply and return pipes and plug the ends to prevent fluid loss and contamination.

3. Mark the position of the lower intermediate shaft universal joint in relation to the steering gear input shaft (see section 17). Unscrew the lower intermediate shaft clamping bolt.
4. Remove the steering rod ends from the steering knuckle arms (see section 19).
5. Support the steering gear and unscrew the mounting clamps of the steering gear housing. Lower the gear, disconnect the intermediate shaft from the input shaft of the steering gear, then remove the steering gear from the vehicle.

Installation
6. Install the steering gear in place and attach the intermediate shaft, aligning the marks.
7. Install the mounting clamps and steering gear housing bolts, tighten them to the torque specified in the specifications in this Chapter.

8. Attach the steering rod ends to the steering knuckle arms (section 19).
9. Install the universal joint pinch bolt and tighten it to the torque specified in the specifications in this Chapter.
10. Connect the power steering supply and return lines to the steering gearbox, then fill the power steering pump reservoir with the recommended fluid (see Chapter 1).
11. Lower the vehicle to the ground and bleed the steering system as described in section 22.
