All models are equipped with rack and pinion steering. The steering gear is screwed to the bulkhead and controls the steering arms via the steering rods. The inner tails of the steering rods are protected by rubber boots, it is necessary to periodically inspect the boots for tears and grease leaks, it is also necessary to check the fasteners.

The power steering system consists of a belt-driven pump and associated pipes and hoses. It is necessary to periodically check the fluid level in the power steering pump reservoir (see Chapter 1).

The steering wheel controls the steering shaft, which drives the steering gear via universal joints. Increased free play in the steering can be caused by wear of the universal joints of the steering shaft, steering gear, steering rod ends, and loose mounting bolts.

Note: Some later Galant models are equipped with a four-wheel steering system. The system consists of a hydraulic cylinder with links to the rear suspension, a hydraulic control valve and pump mounted on top of the differential housing, as well as lines and feeder flexible hoses.

Warning: Repair and inspection of the system and pressure control require special equipment and trained personnel, we strongly recommend that you contact the dealer for this work.
