The primary function of the starting system is to crank the engine fast enough to start it.

The starting system consists of a battery, a starter, a starter traction relay and connecting wires. The starter traction relay is mounted on the starter.

The starter/solenoid assembly is mounted at the bottom of the engine, near the clutch basket.

When the ignition key is turned to the Start position, the traction relay is activated via the starter control circuit. In doing so, the traction relay connects the battery to the starter. The battery supplies power to the starter, which turns the engine.

When working with the starting system, observe the following safety precautions:
  • a) Operating the starter for too long may cause it to overheat and cause serious damage. Do not operate the starter for more than 30 seconds at a time, and allow the starter to cool for at least 2 minutes if the engine does not start.
  • b) The starter is connected directly to the battery, so if the operating instructions are not followed, a short circuit or fire may occur.
  • c) Always disconnect the negative battery cable before working on the starting system.
