The charging system generally does not require routine maintenance. However, the drive belt, battery, and cables should be inspected at the intervals specified in Chapter 1.
When you turn the key to the Start position, the indicator light on the instrument panel should come on and go out immediately. If the light remains on, this indicates a fault in the charging system (section 14).
When working with electrical circuits of the generator, be careful and pay attention to the following safety precautions:
- a) When connecting the wires from the battery to the generator, observe the polarity.
- b) Before using arc welding equipment to repair a vehicle, disconnect the wires from the generator and battery terminals.
- c) Do not start the engine with the charger connected.
- d) Disconnect both battery cables before using the charger.
- d) The generator is driven by a drive belt from the engine, so when the engine is running, injuries may occur if hands, hair or clothing come into contact with the running engine.
- e) If the battery is overloaded or short-circuited, the generator connected directly to the battery may cause a short circuit or fire.
- g) Before cleaning the engine with steam, cover the generator with a plastic bag and secure the bag with a rubber band.
