Warning: Before performing any work near the air bag unit, steering column or instrument panel, turn off the SRS to avoid injury from accidental deployment (see Chapter On-board electrical equipment). The SRS circuit wiring is easily identified by its yellow insulation. To avoid damaging the SRS system, make sure that the steering shaft does not turn after removing the steering wheel. Lock the column with the ignition key with the front wheels straight ahead.
Removal
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Warning! If the car stereo system is equipped with a security code, make sure you have the correct combination to activate the audio system before disconnecting the battery!
2. If the vehicle is equipped accordingly, deactivate the airbag (see Chapter On-board electrical equipment).
3. Remove the steering wheel (see Section Removal and installation the steering wheel).
4. On Diamante models, remove the hood release handle.
5. Remove the knee support located under the steering column. Remove the upper and lower sections of the steering column cover.
6. On Diamante models, if required, remove the knee air vent and footwell air supply hose, then carefully disconnect the electrical wiring from the steering column combination switch assembly.
7. On Mirage models, disconnect all electrical wiring, release the retainer and remove the stalk assembly.
8. On Galant models, if equipped, remove the four screws securing the cruise control sliding contact ring to the steering column switch assembly. Remove the two mounting screws and remove the switch.
Installation
1. Install the switch assembly in its regular place and connect the appropriate electrical wiring to it - make sure that all the provided fasteners are securely latched.
2. Install the steering column cover sections and knee support.
3. If removed, reinstall the air supply hose to the foot well and the knee air vent.
4. Make sure that the front wheels of the vehicle remain straight and replace the steering wheel (see Section Removal and installation the steering wheel).
5. Connect the negative cable to the battery and turn the ignition key to the ON position - the SRS indicator light on the instrument panel should come on for seven seconds.
6. Check the proper functioning of the steering column switch.
