Mirage and Galant models
Removal
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Warning! If the car stereo system is equipped with a security code, make sure you have the correct combination to activate the audio system before disconnecting the battery!
2. Remove the hood release handle.
3. Remove the knee support.
4. Remove the air duct sleeve and knee level trim panel.
5. Remove the steering wheel (see Section Removal and installation the steering wheel).
6. Remove the upper and lower sections of the steering column cover.
7. On Galant models, insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the ACC position, then use a small sharp tool to push the locking pin into the lock assembly and remove the lock cylinder.
Note: On models with AT, a sliding lever for the key lock actuator is installed on the wall of the lock cylinder, from which the actuator cable must be disconnected.
8. If equipped, remove the ignition key removal switch signal sensor.
9. Disconnect the wiring from the ignition switch. Remove the mounting screws and remove the switch assembly from the lock cylinder.
Installation
1. On models with AT, remove the key and install the sliding lever on the lock cylinder and connect the drive cable to it. Lubricate the cable with grease and install the cylinder in the lock assembly casing. Check the proper functioning of the blocker.
2. Insert the ignition switch into the rear part of the lock assembly housing, making sure that the wells are aligned correctly.
3. Connect the wiring and install the retainer.
4. Install the steering column covers.
5. Install the steering wheel and knee support.
6. Install the hood release handle.
7. Connect the negative cable to the battery, activate the airbag and check the ignition switch for proper operation.
Diamante Models
Warning: Before performing any work near the air bag unit, steering column or instrument panel, turn off the SRS to avoid injury from accidental deployment (see Chapter On-board electrical equipment). The SRS circuit wiring is easily identified by the yellow color of the insulation.
Removal
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

2. Deactivate the airbag (see Chapter On-board electrical equipment).
3. Remove the steering wheel (see Section Removal and installation the steering wheel).
4. Remove the hood release handle.
5. Remove the switches located on the knee rest panel under the steering column, unscrew the exposed screws and dismantle the rest.
6. Remove the upper and lower sections of the steering column cover, being careful not to break the guide tabs.
7. If necessary, remove the air supply hose to the foot well, then carefully disconnect the electrical wiring from the ignition switch.
8. Remove the mounting screws and release the switch from the lock cylinder.
Installation
1. Insert the switch into the lock assembly housing, - make sure the wells are aligned correctly. Screw in and tighten the mounting screws.
2. Connect the electrical wiring to the switch.
3. Install the knee air vent and air duct sleeve.
4. Install the knee rest and switch panel.
5. Install the hood release handle.
6. Install the steering wheel.
7. Install the steering column covers.
8. Connect the negative cable to the battery, activate the airbag and check the ignition switch for proper operation.
