Warning: Before performing any work near the air bag unit, steering column or instrument panel, turn off the SRS to avoid injury from accidental deployment (see Chapter On-board electrical equipment). The SRS circuit wiring is easily identified by the yellow color of the insulation.

Removal

1. If the vehicle is equipped accordingly, deactivate the airbag (see Chapter On-board electrical equipment).

2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

Warning! If the car stereo system is equipped with a security code, make sure you have the correct combination to activate the audio system before disconnecting the battery!

3. Remove the hood release handle from the lower trim section.

4. Remove the knee support.

5. Remove the knee level air hose and remove the steering wheel (see Section Removal and installation the steering wheel).

6. Remove the upper and lower sections of the steering column cover.

7. On Diamante models, remove the knee air vent and the footwell air supply hose.

8. If necessary, release the wiring harness from the intermediate fasteners on the steering column.

9. Disconnect the corresponding contact connectors.

10. On Galant and Diamante models, remove the mounting screws and the steering column switch (complete with airbag contact spring - models equipped with SRS) from the left side of the steering column.

11. On Diamante models, remove the mounting screws and remove the ignition switch from the lock cylinder assembly.

12. Insert the key into the ignition lock cylinder and turn it to the ACC position.

13. Using a suitable sharp tool, push the locking pin inward into the steering column lock cylinder and pull the lock cylinder out.

14. If equipped, remove the ignition key removal switch signal sensor.

Installation

1. On Mirage models, install the lock cylinder onto its support bracket.

Note: If the bracket has been replaced, make sure the cylinder is functioning properly before breaking off the shear lock heads.

2. On Galant and Diamante models, install the cylinder into the lock assembly housing - make sure the locking pins snap into place securely. Insert the ignition switch into the housing, align the lock holes and screw in the mounting screws.

3. On Galant and Diamante models, reinstall the steering column switch assembly with the SRS contact drum, reconnecting the wiring to its original location.

4. If equipped, install the key removal switch-signal sensor.

5. Connect the wiring and install the retainer.

6. If removed, reinstall the knee air vent and air duct sleeve.

7. Install the steering column covers.

8. Install the steering wheel and knee support.

9. Install the hood release handle.

10. Connect the negative cable to the battery, activate the airbag and check the ignition switch for proper operation.
