The coolant pump is attached to the V-belt side of the engine block. It cannot be repaired. If it fails, the entire pump must be replaced. If the shaft seal is defective, coolant leaks into the engine block, especially when the engine is running hot. Coolant then emerges at the ventilation hole of the coolant pump drive shaft.

Removal, petrol engine

Disconnect the ground cable from the battery.

Caution: This erases data in the electronic memory, such as the engine fault memory or the radio receiver code. Disconnect the battery only when the ignition is switched off, otherwise the fuel injection device control unit may be damaged. Before disconnecting the battery, read the instructions in the "Radio receiver" and "Removing and installing the battery" sections.

Drain the coolant and collect it, see p. 3.3.

Diesel engine: Remove the upper part of the intake manifold, see p. 1.10.

Gasoline engine: Remove the lower cover.

Remove the timing belt, see p. 1.6.

Diesel engine: Remove the timing belt tension roller, see p. 1.11.

Loosen the V-belt tension bar.

Loosen the bolts securing the coolant pump to the engine block, remove the coolant pump with the gasket.

Remove the sealing ring from the coolant inlet fitting (or remove it from the middle coolant pipe).

Examination

Check all coolant pump parts for cracks, damage and wear.

Turn the pump by hand and pay attention to unusual noises or heavy running. Replace the pump if necessary.

If water comes out through hole "A", the bearing seal is defective. In this case, the pump should be replaced.

Installation

Carefully use a scraper to remove any remaining sealing compound from the surfaces of the coolant pump housing and engine block.

Insert a new sealing ring into the groove at the front end of the intake pipe. Before installing the coolant pump, wet the sealing ring with water.

Caution: Never apply oil or grease to the O-ring.

Replace the paper gasket, do not use any additional sealant. The mating surfaces must be dry and clean.

Diesel engine

Install the coolant pump, screw in and tighten the mounting bolts by hand according to their length.

Tighten all bolts to the torque values indicated on their heads.
  • Marking "4": 15 Nm
  • Marking "7": 25 Nm

Check that the coolant pump rotates freely and there is no obstruction when rotating.

Secure the generator tensioner with a force of 25 Nm.

Diesel engine: Tighten the timing belt tensioner roller to 55 Nm.

Install the timing belt, see p. 1.6.

Install the V-belt, see p. 1.21.
  • Diesel Engine: Install the upper intake manifold.
  • Gasoline engine: Install the lower cover.

Connect the ground cable to the battery.

Set the time on the clock, if available, and enter the radio security code.

After a test drive, check the cooling system for leaks.
