Some gearbox mounting surfaces are fitted with a gasket which is formed in the working position. To ensure the full functional effectiveness of such a gasket, certain rules must be followed when applying it.
The most important factors are layer thickness, layer continuity and the accuracy of the gasket position. Too thin a gasket may cause leaks. At the same time, too thick a layer can cause displacement of the gasket and mating surfaces, clogging or narrowing of the channels for supplying technical fluids. Therefore, to avoid leaks through the joint, it is necessary to apply the gasket evenly and continuously, constantly monitoring the layer thickness during the application process. Since cold applied adhesive cures by reaction with moisture in the air, it is typically applied to metal flange surfaces.
Disassembly
Parts connected using a gasket formed in the working position are disassembled quite easily and do not require the use of special disassembly methods.
However, in some cases it may be necessary to tap the joint with a mallet or similar tool to break the gasket layer. You can also insert a flat, thin gasket scraper into the joint and tap it lightly with a hammer. In this case, it is necessary to act especially carefully to avoid damaging the mounting surfaces.
Surface preparation
Carefully remove all foreign matter adhering to the surface to which the in-place gasket will be applied using a gasket scraper or wire brush. Check the condition of the surfaces under the gasket - they must be smooth and flat. Completely clean the mounting surfaces from oils, greases and dirt. Remove any remaining old sealant from the mounting holes for the bolts.

Application of a gasket formed in the working position
Applying a gasket formed in the working position to a pre-prepared surface is a fairly simple procedure. However, some precautions must be taken during the application process. The gasket layer must be continuous and of the specified thickness. The holes for the bolts must be outlined without breaking the continuity of the layer. Before the gasket hardens, it can be removed from the surface. The surfaces of the assembled parts must be joined in the installation position before the gasket hardens (within about 15 minutes).
Before installing the parts, make sure that the gasket is applied to the surfaces only in the specified area. In addition, water and oil should not be allowed to come into contact with the joint surfaces, and the engine should not be run for a certain period of time, which is necessary for the gasket to harden (approximately one hour after installation is complete). The procedure for applying the gasket formed in the working position may vary slightly, depending on the characteristics of the surfaces being joined.
