If you have decided that the engine needs to be removed from the car for an overhaul or major repair, then you need to take several preparatory steps.
Choosing a convenient place to work is especially important. There must be sufficient working space near the place where the car is stored. If there is no garage, then in extreme cases a flat, horizontal and clean concrete or asphalt work area will do.
Cleaning the engine bay and engine itself before removing it will help keep your tools clean and tidy.
A winch or A-frame is required. Make sure the equipment is rated to support the combined weight of the engine and transmission. Safety is paramount given the potential hazards associated with removing the engine from the vehicle.
If the engine is being removed by a novice, it is necessary to invite an assistant. It would also be good to get advice and help from someone more experienced. There are many situations when one person is not able to perform all the necessary operations when removing the engine from the car.
Plan ahead. Before you begin, acquire all the equipment and tools you will need. Here is a list of some of the equipment you will need to remove and install the engine safely and relatively easily (in addition to a winch): a heavy-duty floor jack, a full set of socket wrenches and sockets as listed at the beginning of this guide, wooden blocks, rags, and cleaning solution to mop up spilled oil, coolant, and gasoline.
Expect the car to be out of service for some time. Some work can only be done in a workshop with special equipment.
Be very careful when removing or installing the engine. Careless actions can lead to serious injury. Plan the work in advance, take your time and it will be completed successfully.
