Do-it-yourself work involves several options for overhaul. The decision to replace the cylinder block, pistons/connecting rods assembly, and crankshaft depends on a number of factors, the main one being the condition of the cylinder block. Other factors include cost, availability of a mechanical workshop, availability of spare parts, time to complete the work, and the necessary experience in doing the work yourself.

Some alternative restoration procedures include:
  • Individual parts - If the inspection has shown that the engine block and most engine components are in good working order, then the most economical option is to buy individual parts. The engine block, crankshaft, and pistons/connecting rods should be carefully checked. Even if the engine block is not very worn, the cylinders should be honed.
  • The low-end cylinder block consists of the cylinder block with the crankshaft and piston/connecting rod assembly installed. All bearings are new and clearances are correct. The old camshaft, valve timing components, cylinder head(s) and external components can be installed on the low-end cylinder block with virtually no need to go to a workshop.
  • A complete cylinder block is a small cylinder block plus an oil pump, oil pan, cylinder head(s), rocker cover(s), camshaft and timing components, sprockets and chain or gears and timing cover. All components are installed with new bearings, seals and gaskets. All that is required is to connect the manifolds and external components.

Choose the option that suits you best and consult with specialists before ordering or purchasing spare parts.
