Valves — Maintenance (Mitsubishi Galant 5)

1. Since repairing valves, valve seats and guides is a complex procedure and requires special tools, this work should be performed by a specialist.

2. An amateur mechanic can remove and disassemble the cylinder head, clean and inspect it, then reassemble it and take it to a service center for the actual repair. Performing a cylinder head inspection will allow you to determine the condition of the cylinder head and the valve train components located within it, and when communicating with the service center, you can be confident in what work needs to be done and what parts need to be replaced.

3. Auto service specialists will remove valves and springs, restore or replace valves and valve seats, restore valve guides, check and replace valve springs, holders and spring crackers (if necessary), replace valve seals with new ones, assemble the valve mechanism and check the height of the installed springs. The sealing surface of the cylinder head will be ground if it is warped

4. Once the valve train has been repaired by a professional, the cylinder head will be as good as new. When the cylinder head is returned to you, clean it again before installing it on the engine to remove any metal particles and abrasive dust that may have remained from the valve repair and cylinder head resurfacing. If possible, use compressed air to clean the oil passages.
