Removal
1. Drain the coolant from the cooling system.
2. Remove the timing belt.
3. Remove the air filter and air intake pipe.
4. Remove the ignition distributor on single overhead camshaft (SOHC) engines.

5. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the lower radiator hose 10 (Fig. 6.13). Before disconnecting the radiator hose, apply alignment marks to the hose and clamp.
6. Unscrew the bolts and remove the thermostat housing 8 as an assembly and gasket 9.
7. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the heater hose 5.
8. Loosen the clamp and disconnect hose 1 or 4 of the cooling system.
9. Loosen the clamp and disconnect hose 2 or 3 of the cooling system.
10. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the cooling system supply pipe 12 as an assembly and gasket 13.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.

1. When installing the thermostat, evenly squeeze out the Mitsubishi Genuine Part # MD970389 sealant from the tube, applying it so that there is no excess sealant or gaps (Fig. 6.14).
2. Place the gasket on the coolant inlet pipe and apply a small amount of coolant or water to its outer surface.
Caution: Do not allow engine oil or grease to come into contact with the gasket surface.
3. Push each hose onto the pipe fittings (inlet pipe fitting) until it stops.

4. Before connecting the hoses, align the previously applied alignment marks on the hose and clamp.
5. Check the cooling system hoses and pipes for cracks, damage or blockages. If any faults are found, replace the relevant parts.
6. Fill the cooling system with coolant.
7. Install the timing belt of the gas distribution mechanism.
8. Install the air filter and air intake manifold.
9. Install the ignition distributor on single overhead camshaft (SOHC) engines.
