2. Measure the free play around the steering wheel circumference.
Free play of the steering wheel: no more than 30 mm
3. If the free play exceeds the permissible value, the universal joints of the steering shaft or steering gear are worn out. Repair or replace the worn parts.
4. If after repair the free play exceeds the permissible value, set the front wheels to the straight-ahead position and apply a force of 5 N to turn the steering wheel (Fig. 16.2). Apply the force along the outer diameter of the steering wheel.

If the free play exceeds the permissible value, remove the steering gear and check the total rotation torque of the steering gear pinion.
