Warning: Warnings specific to vehicles equipped with the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS).
- (1) Improper maintenance or repair of any SRS component (or SRS-related component) may result in injury or death to the maintenance personnel (due to unauthorized air bag deployment) or to the driver and front passenger (due to inoperability of the SRS system following improper maintenance or repair).
- (2) Maintenance or repair of any component of the system.
SRS (or related component) must be performed only by an authorized MITSUBISHI dealer.
Note: The SRS system includes the following components: SRS control unit, air bag modules, coil wire and connecting wires.
The vehicles are equipped with two types of steering wheels: three-spoke for standard models and four-spoke for models equipped with the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). The steering column is equipped with a shock absorption device and a tilt adjustment mechanism.
The steering gear is of the rack and pinion type with power assistance, with the steering gear and steering drive combined into one lightweight and compact unit (Fig. 16.1).

The hydraulic power steering consists of a vane pump with a fluid flow control system, due to which the servo drive force changes depending on the engine crankshaft speed.
