Checking the steering wheel turning force (Mitsubishi Space Star)

1. With the vehicle on a firm, level surface, set the front wheels to straight ahead.

2. Increase the engine crankshaft speed to 1000±100 min⁻¹

Warning: After checking, leave the engine running at idle speed

3. Attach the dynamometer to the steering wheel spoke at the point furthest from the wheel center (Fig. 16.5). With the front wheels set to drive straight ahead, measure the force required to turn the wheel left and right 1.5 turns. Also check the resistance to deflection of the tie rod end ball joint.



Steering wheel turning force: no more than 34 N

Resistance to deflection of the ball joint of the steering rod end: not more than 5.9 N
