Pic. 14.1. Brake Pedal Height Measurement (nominal value 163.5–166.5 mm): 1 – stoplight switch; 2 - pusher locknut; 3 - pusher
Measure the height of the pedal position as shown in fig. 14.1. If the measured height does not match the nominal value, then perform the following operations.
1. Disconnect the connector from the brake light switch.
Pic. 14.2. Adjusting the height of the brake pedal above the floor for vehicles with ABS: 1 - locknut
2. Unscrew the lock nut of the pusher and, by rotating the pusher in one direction or another, with the help of pliers, adjust the required height of the brake pedal above the floor (for vehicles with ABS) (pic. 14.2).
3. Tighten the pusher locknut (for vehicles with ABS).
4. Move the brake light switch in the direction of the brake pedal travel as far as it will go. The switch will only move when pressed hard.
Pic. 14.3. Measurement of a backlash of installation of the switch of stoplights
5. Raise the brake pedal until the pusher is fully extended and then move the brake light switch to the desired position. By rotating the switch, adjust its position so that the gap corresponds to that shown in fig. 14.3.
6. Connect a socket of the switch of stoplights.
7. Be convinced that lamps of stoplights do not burn at the released brake pedal.
8. With the engine off, press the brake pedal two or three times.
9. After removing the vacuum from the brake booster, press the brake pedal by hand and make sure that the movement of the pedal until resistance begins (free play) is in the optimal range.
10. If the free play of the brake pedal exceeds the nominal value, then the clearance in the connection of the brake pedal lever with the pedal mounting bracket is probably increased. Check clearance and replace damaged parts if necessary. The nominal value is 3-8mm
11. Start the engine, press the brake pedal with a force of approximately 490 N and measure the distance between the interior floor and the pedal. The nominal value is more than 80 mm.
12. If this distance is less than the nominal value, check the presence of air in the hydraulic system of the brakes, the clearance between the shoes and the drum of the drum brakes, or the parking brake sticking. Adjust and replace defective parts as necessary.
