1. Turn the tie rod end ten times vigorously.

2. Use a spring dynamometer (Fig. 13.15) to measure the turning resistance of the tie rod end (torsion torque). The nominal value is 6–20 N (1.5–4.9 N·m).
3. If the measured value exceeds the nominal value, replace the steering rod.
4. If the measured value is less than the nominal value, but the steering rod turns smoothly, without excessive play, then such a tip is suitable for use.
