Warning: When removing the driver's airbag and coil wire, follow the safety precautions when servicing the SRS system.

Removal

  • Remove the multifunction stalk switch with integrated rear window wiper and washer switch and wiper relay
  • Open the cover, unscrew the nut and remove the arm and wiper blade. Remove the arm and wiper blade with the wiper arm raised, as shown in Figure 17.74.

Warning: If the wiper arm is removed in the lowered position, the spring pressure will damage the conical bore of the arm with the drive shaft splines: this will reduce the reliability of this connection by increasing the diameter of the conical bore of the wiper arm.

  • Remove the protective cap and unscrew the windshield wiper mounting nut.
  • Loosen the windshield wiper motor mounting bolts, disconnect the electrical connector and remove the motor.
  • Remove the washer nozzle.

Installation

  • Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.
  • Position the wiper arm so that the blade is on the glass near the edge of the glass spray area (Fig. 17.75).

Checking the rear window wiper switch

Using an ohmmeter, check the conductivity between the connector contacts at different positions of the rear window wiper switch (see Fig. 17.68).

Checking the rear window wiper motor

  • The rear window wiper motor must be installed in the vehicle and the electrical harness connector must be disconnected from the motor.
  • Using additional wires, connect the battery terminals to contacts 1 and 3 of the engine connector as shown in Figure 17.76 (A), and check the operation of the windshield wiper.
  • Using additional wires, connect the battery terminals to contacts 2 and 3 of the motor connector as shown in Figure 17.76 (B), and make sure that after the windshield wiper motor starts to operate, it stops in its original position.

Checking the rear window washer motor

  • When checking, the tank must be installed in the car and filled with liquid.
  • Using additional wires, connect the positive terminal of the battery to contact 2 of the connector and the negative terminal to contact 1 of the connector; the liquid should spray onto the rear window (Fig. 17.77).
