Removal

  • Press the latches and lower the glove compartment down.
  • Remove the screws, disconnect the connector and remove the passenger airbag. Store the removed airbag in a clean, dry place with the front side facing up. Do not place any foreign objects on the airbag that could cause serious injury when the airbag deploys.

Examination

  • If any defect is found in the airbag during inspection, replace it.

Warning: Do not attempt to measure the resistance of the airbag inflator circuit as this may result in unauthorized deployment of the driver airbag.

  • Check the airbag cover for dents, cracks, or deformation.
  • Check the connectors for damage and the connector contacts for deformation.
  • Check the pyrotechnic gas generator, which converts the control electrical signal into an ignition signal, resulting in the decomposition of the powder, inflating the airbag bag (Fig. 19.120).

  • Install the passenger airbag into the instrument panel and check its alignment.

Installation

  • Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.
  • Connect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery.
  • Turn on the ignition.
  • Check that the SRS indicator light stays on for 7 seconds after turning the ignition switch to the ON position, then stays on for at least 5 seconds after turning the ignition switch to the OFF position. This indicates that the SRS system is functioning normally.
