Safety precautions for SRS maintenance (Mitsubishi Pajero 4)

1. To prevent injury to yourself and others from accidental air bag deployment and accidental deployment of the seat belt pre-tensioner when performing maintenance work, read and strictly follow all precautions and operations described in this manual.

2. Do not use any equipment to test electrical circuits on or near the SRS other than that specified.

Attention:

Never attempt to disassemble or repair the following components:

SRS Electronic Control Unit;

Clock spring;

Front airbag module (from the driver's side or from the passenger's side);

Side airbag module;

Side impact sensor;

Seat belt with pretensioner.

Note: If any of these components are determined to be faulty, they can only be replaced in accordance with the SRS Individual Component Service procedure outlined in this manual.

3. After disconnecting the negative battery cable, wait at least 60 seconds before proceeding further. The SRS system is designed so that after the battery is disconnected, sufficient voltage remains for a short time to deploy the airbag. Therefore, if work is performed on the SRS system immediately after the battery has been disconnected, unintentional deployment of the air bag could result in serious injury.

4. Do not repair the SRS connectors. If a connector is found to be faulty, the wiring harness must be replaced.

5. Checking the SRS electronic control unit wiring harness (cars with side airbags) should be carried out as follows. Insert the special tool (thin feeler gauge from the special tool kit) into the connector on the wiring harness side (back side) and connect the tester to this probe. Using any tool other than the designated one may damage the wiring and other parts. Furthermore, the measurement should not be made by directly touching the probe to the terminals from the front of the connector. The terminals are coated to increase their conductivity, so if you touch them directly with the probe, the coating may be damaged (get scratched), which may lead to reduced reliability.

6. SRS and seat belt pretensioner components should not be exposed to temperatures higher than specified, so remove the SRS control unit, air bag module (from the driver's side and from the front passenger's side), clock spring, side impact sensors, front seat assemblies (with side airbags), and seat belts with pretensioners before drying or heating in the oven after painting.

7. Whenever you complete SRS service, check the operation of the SRS indicator light to make sure the system is functioning normally.

8. Make sure the ignition switch is in the OFF position when connecting and disconnecting the MUT-II.
