Checking and cleaning spark plugs (Mitsubishi Carisma)

1. Disconnect the high-voltage wires from the spark plugs.

Caution: When removing wires, be sure to hold the wire tip, not the wire itself.


2. Remove the spark plugs.

3. Check for burnout of the electrodes or damage to the spark plug insulator.

4. Remove carbon deposits using a steel brush or spark plug cleaning machine. After cleaning, clean the spark plugs from sand by blowing them with compressed air.

5. Using a round spark plug feeler gauge, check the gap between the spark plug electrodes (Fig. 9.31).

Nominal gap value: 1.0–1.1 mm.

6. If the gap does not correspond to the nominal value, adjust it by bending the side electrode.

7. Clean the spark plug holes.

Caution! Be careful not to allow foreign objects to enter the cylinder.


8. Install and screw in the spark plugs.
