SOHC Engine Ignition Distributor (MPI) (Mitsubishi Space Star)

Removal

• Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.
• Remove the air filter.
• Disconnect the high-voltage wires from the ignition distributor (Fig. 9.16).

Warning: When disconnecting high-voltage wires, pull on the wire tip, not on the wire itself.

• Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition distributor.
• Remove the screws and remove the distributor and sealing ring.

Disassembly

• Remove the two screws and remove the distributor cap (Fig. 9.17).

• Remove the distributor rotor by pulling.
• Remove the protective cover.
• Remove the bolts and the distributor housing and sealing ring.

Examination

• Clean the ignition distributor parts with clean kerosene and dry them.
• Check the condition of the breaker contacts. Check the distributor cap for corrosion and electrode burns. Check the smoothness of the carbon contact movement and the amount of its protrusion.
• If the distributor rotor contact is burnt, replace the distributor rotor.
• Check the lid for cracks.

Assembly

• Assembly is carried out in the reverse order of disassembly.

Installation

• Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.
• Remove the upper timing belt cover.
• Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the timing marks on the camshaft pulley and cylinder head are aligned (Fig. 9.18).

Note: When the timing marks on the camshaft pulley and cylinder head are aligned, piston No.1 cylinder will be at TDC in the compression stroke.

• Align the timing marks on the ignition distributor and coupling and install the ignition distributor on the engine (Fig. 9.19).

• Connect the high-voltage wires and electrical connector to the ignition distributor.
• Install the air filter.
• Check and adjust the ignition timing.
