Note: The following procedures are much easier to perform if the fuel tank is empty. Some tanks have a drain plug. If there is no drain plug, plan to remove the fuel tank when it is nearly empty.
1. Remove the fuel tank filler cap to relieve pressure from the tank.
2. If the vehicle is equipped with a fuel injection system, relieve pressure from the fuel system (see section 2).
3. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.
4. If there is still fuel in the tank, you can drain it through the fuel supply line after raising the car. If the tank has a drain plug, unscrew it and drain the fuel into a suitable container.
5. Raise the vehicle and place it on stable stands.
6. Disconnect the fuel lines, vapor return line and fuel filler neck.
Note: The fuel supply, return and vapor return lines have different diameters, so connection is easy. However, if in doubt, clearly mark the lines and corresponding fittings. Plug the hoses to prevent leaks and contamination of the fuel system.
7. Pump fuel out of the tank through the fuel supply line - not through the return line.
8. Support the fuel tank with a jack or stand. Place a wooden block between the jack and the fuel tank to protect the tank.
9. Disconnect both tank mounting clamps and bend them down so that they are out of the way.
10. Lower the tank enough to be able to disconnect the electrical wiring and ground wire from the fuel tank/fuel level sender if you have not already done so.

12. Perform installation in reverse order.
